Professional Surfer: Rob Machado Biography
Rob Machado is not just one of the world’s greatest surfers; he’s one of the sport’s most recognizable characters, a living icon who continues to expand the definition of what professional surfing is all about. Known for his Zen-like flow both on land and in the water, Machado was consistently amongst the top seeded competitors while on the ASP World Tour. With 12 career WCT victories, Machado has been among the elite top ten most popular surfers since 1996 on Surfer Magazine’s Surfer Poll and was inducted into the Surfer’s Hall of Fame in 2000 and re-inducted in 2006. In 2009 the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) awarded him the prestigious honor of Waterman’s of the Year and in 20011 the City of Huntington Beach California awarded him with a star on the Surfing Walk of Fame.
His contribution to the sport extends far beyond his accolades in a colored jersey. Since his departure from the ASP tour in 2001, Machado has been one of surfing’s most committed ambassadors, roaming the globe, surfing the world’s best waves and deepening his commitment to support various humanitarian and environmental organizations.
In 2004 Rob established The Rob Machado Foundation, which in partnership with the Cardiff SEA develops and financially supports the “greening” of Machado’s hometown’s elementary school district. Since inception, the collaboration initiatives have included onsite recycling, organic gardening and healthy lunch programs. More information on programs can be found at www.RobMachadoFoundation.org
Rob’s goodwill does not stop on the local-level as he is a central figure for his sponsor’s efforts through the Reef Redemption program and Hurley’s H20 Water education initiative. In 2009 he was the recipient of the One Degree Less Award from Planet Green + the Water Council of Brazil Project as well as being recognized for his dedication to environmental activism awarded by Oceana.
All of this – along with his down-to-earth, approachable aura – makes Machado one of surfing’s most influential athletes of all time. And since he’s still writing his incredible story, it’s an influence that will only grow over time.
